At least 35,000 applicants may be affected, alerts the United States embassy

A substantial security compromise in Somalia's e-visa platform may have exposed private data pertaining to many thousands of applicants, comprising American nationals, the US embassy in Somalia has alerted.

The embassy reported had received reliable information that "unknown cyber attackers" breached the Federal Government of Somalia's e-visa platform, potentially compromising information belonging to approximately 35,000 individuals.

The compromised files being shared on the internet comprise full names, photographs, date of birth information, marital status, residential locations and electronic mail addresses, as stated in a United States official announcement released on recently.

"This information compromise remains active and might reveal all private information you enter into the system," United Kingdom officials has similarly alerted visitors.

"Evaluate the dangers before applying for an electronic visa required for visiting the Somali nation."

Government Response

Federal administration representatives have remained silent about the security compromise. Nevertheless the government has transferred visa processing from the initial application portal toward the new application website, without issuing an official explanation.

"Although Embassy Mogadishu cannot verify whether an individual's data is included in the security incident, travelers who have requested visas via the digital application platform may be affected," the US' statement stated.

Territorial Consequences

The revised application procedure requires all travellers, including those from the autonomous region of Somaliland and the self-governing territory of Puntland, to seek travel visas via electronic platforms.

Opponents claim applicants have experienced extra fees in particular territories, equivalent to double charges.

Regional Dynamics

The self-declared republic, that announced sovereignty in 1991, administers its affairs through independent structures but has not been global recognition. Somalia insists that this territory still constitutes its national domain.

The reported compromise exacerbates long-running tensions involving central government and Hargeisa over control of national air territory. Even though federal authorities re-established full control of its airspace in the past decade, Hargeisa administration persistently challenges the current system.

Ongoing Conflict

The disagreement worsened this week after Somaliland's President Abdirahman Irro announced the northern territory would not accept Somalia's e-visa and instructed that airlines need to acquire clearance from northern authorities prior to accessing their territorial skies.

Yet major airlines have declined to accept travelers absent federal visa authorization.

Recently, Hargeisa's international relations official the diplomatic representative reiterated that "anyone travelling to Somaliland will obtain travel authorization at the point of entry", saying the federal electronic visa platform posed risks and alerting that "individual details can fall into extremist organizations" due to utilizing the system.

Travel Disruptions

The conflict has caused certain visitors traveling to the northern region unable to board flights due to rejection at check-in due to absence of Somalia's e-visa.

Hargeisa's air transport representative, Fu'aad Ahmed Nuux, has told media outlets that the regulations - initially declared in recent months - became operational on the tenth of November.

The minister stated companies that ignore will be told to divert, and stated several aircraft had been forced to change paths.

Airspace Control Conflict

Footage published by Hargeisa's civil aviation authority reportedly displays regional aviation officials providing guidance to global airline crews - an action celebrated domestically as a demonstration of Somaliland's autonomy.

However the federal aviation regulator asserts it possesses complete jurisdictional power over the federal aviation control area (Flight Information Region), that includes all territorial skies. It has ordered each flight to disregard any instructions coming from sources besides central government.

It warned that not adhering to national and worldwide air transport standards could create security threats and lead to "significant legal repercussions".
