However the 29-year-old has made changes in the past month, attempting to approach the net and play positively, backed up by an better service.

The champion fought back from a disadvantage in the opening set against the tricky Moutet, securing four of the final five games to go ahead.

Both players swapped breaks in the following set before the challenger, bidding for his initial tour victory, seized the initiative to push for a third set.

The opponent defended 4 initial break points in a tight third set before Medvedev broke to 15 to secure the win.

Suitably, Medvedev secured the win with a shot at the front of the court, with the Frenchman unable to handle a volley after a lengthy match.
