British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have joined forces with France's air force in a coordinated attack against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the UK's MoD.

The site, identified by intelligence, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was located in mountains just north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a number of approach shafts down to the site... early reports indicate the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the attack late on Saturday and each participating jet returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as ISIS - established extremist governance over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike demonstrates British leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with allied nations, to eradicate any resurgence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

RAF aircraft have conducted patrols over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its routing at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank the personnel of our armed forces who took part in this mission for their skill and their valour," the Defence Secretary said. "Including them were numerous British troops deployed over the festive period. This mission, to take out terrorist threats who pose a risk to our safety, demonstrates how UK forces are ready to step up, continuously, ensuring Britain's security domestically and strong abroad."

Last December, the American forces carried out what it termed a "major assault" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an attack claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN says IS still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
